A business opens. A farmer tries something different. A neighbourhood changes. Someone volunteers hundreds of hours without much recognition. A young entrepreneur takes a chance. A local organization solves a problem. A council makes a decision that will affect residents for years. Some of those stories make the news. Many don't. **Upper Fraser Valley News exists to help close that gap.** We are a regional digital news publication covering the people, businesses, communities and issues shaping **Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope and the surrounding Upper Fraser Valley.** And we're approaching local news a little differently. ## The Valley Doesn't Stop at Municipal Boundaries Traditional local news is often organized around individual cities. But that isn't necessarily how people live. Someone might live in Mission, work in Abbotsford, have customers in Chilliwack and spend the weekend in Harrison. Businesses recruit across the Valley. Transportation crosses municipal boundaries. Housing pressures move from one community to another. Agriculture, healthcare, education, employment and economic development are regional issues as much as local ones. Upper Fraser Valley News will still cover individual communities. But we'll also connect the dots between them. **Because sometimes the bigger story is what's happening across the Valley.** ## People Are the Story Government announcements and breaking news matter. But they're only part of what makes a community interesting. We want to introduce readers to the people behind the Upper Fraser Valley. The entrepreneur starting a company. The farmer whose family has worked the same land for generations. The newcomer building a life here. The volunteer everybody in town seems to know. The local business celebrating its 50th anniversary. The student with an extraordinary idea. The person doing something remarkable who has somehow never appeared in the news. **Those are stories worth telling.** ## Local Business Is Local News Business will be an important part of our coverage. Not simply corporate announcements. We want to understand what's actually happening in the Upper Fraser Valley economy. Who's opening? Who's expanding? Who's hiring? What industries are growing? What are businesses struggling with? Where are the opportunities? What does a changing economy mean for the people who live here? Small businesses, farms, trades, manufacturers, professionals, technology companies, retailers and entrepreneurs all help shape their communities. **Their stories belong in the local news.** ## We Report. You Decide. We all have opinions. So do the people who write for us. So do the people we interview. And certainly so do our readers. But there's a difference between **having an opinion and reporting a story.** Our job is to gather the facts, talk to the people involved, provide context and tell readers what we know as clearly and fairly as possible. When there are different sides to an issue, we want readers to understand them. When something is disputed, we'll tell you. When we don't know something, we'll say so. And when we get something wrong, we'll correct it. There are already plenty of places online where people can argue about the news. **Upper Fraser Valley News wants to report it.** We'll give you the information. **You make up your own mind.** ## You Don't Have to Be a Journalist Some of the people who know the Upper Fraser Valley best have never written a news story in their lives. **Those are exactly the people we want to hear from.** Maybe you know agriculture. Maybe you understand construction. Maybe you're involved with a community organization. Maybe you're a business owner. Maybe you coach a team. Maybe you attend every council meeting. Maybe you know everybody in your neighbourhood. Or maybe you're simply curious. You don't need a journalism degree. You don't need published articles. You don't even need to think of yourself as a writer. **Bring us the story. Bring us what you know. We can help with the writing.** Professional journalists, photographers and experienced writers are welcome too. But we're particularly interested in discovering local voices that might never have considered contributing to a news publication before. ## Think You Know a Story? Look around your community. Who should people know about? What's changing? What's working? What's not working? What new business deserves attention? What local issue isn't being adequately explained? Who's doing something interesting? What are people talking about that hasn't yet made the news? **Tell us.** Because a great local news organization shouldn't just have reporters looking for stories. **It should have an entire community looking.** That's what we want Upper Fraser Valley News to become — a place where the communities of the Upper Fraser Valley can discover what's happening around them and help us discover the stories worth telling.
